Prometheus camps

Curious pondering, games and activities, deep dialogues, new friends, interesting opinions, camp life and a good time. Prometheus camps are all of this and even more.

  • Protu camps are meant for all youth, who are interested in pondering over social and philosophical questions and their own lives in the form of e.g. discussions, games, and plays.
  • The camps’ objective is to strengthen the self-knowledge of participants and offer different life skills e.g. independent and critical thinking and argumentative and respectful discussion.
  • At the camps, there is strive for an atmosphere that is safe, trusting and respectful of the participants' boundaries. The goal is that everyone can feel invaluable the way they are.
  • Everyone is given space to examine their own worldview and develop their own opinions on the themes that are discussed at the camp. Everything is based on trust in people’s capability to make decisions about their own life and take responsibility for themselves, society and the environment.
  • The camps are eight days in length and they are arranged in the months of June to August.
  • Every camp is planned and organized by a trained team of two adult counselors and five junior counselors.

The camps are open for all young people who have just completed their 8th or 9th grade (in the Finnish school system from 14- to 16-year-olds), regardless of their worldview. There are even Finnish speaking senior camps for 17–21-year-olds and adult camps for over 20-year-olds. It’s never too late to experience the best week of your life. Don’t hesitate, come join us!

In the year 2023, we arrange two English-language international camps.

23.–30.7. Oriniemi, International Protu Camp

30.7.-6.8. Oriniemi, International Protu Camp

The enrolment starts on March 7, 2023.

Program

The week is built on themes that are current and puzzling in the lives of young people.

  • equality and diversity
  • relationships
  • identity
  • my life and my future
  • society and how to influence it
  • media
  • world views, ideologies, life philosophies
  • environment
  • intoxicants
  • sexuality

The themes are discussed in many interesting and diverse ways. The most essential way to form opinions is through an equal group discussion. Themes are also discussed through debating, acting, games, live-action role-plays or simulations, and other activities

In addition, the week includes camp life. There is singing, enjoying the sauna, campfires, being together and feeling the atmosphere.

On the last day of the week, there is a Prometheus ceremony. The family members of the campers are more than welcome to join the celebration of their child’s step towards adulthood.

Arrangements

Prometheus Camps are prepared, planned and implemented by a team of counselors, who have been trained for their task during the spring before the camp. The counselors don’t have the answers, rather every camper gets to think on their own and hopefully from as many angles as possible.

The camp group usually consists of 16-18 campers. Those who were only strangers at the beginning of the camp week can become very close, even life-long friends towards the end of the week.

Prometheus Camp Association takes care of the camp arrangements. Both the association and the camps are politically and religiously nonaligned. The association gets some financial aid from the Ministry of Education and Culture, but it is mostly run by volunteers.

The camps are arranged all around Finland.

The campsites are regular camp centres. A calm environment far from the noises of the cities offers a chance to build up the camp atmosphere and time to be with fellow campers.

Welcome!
